Stars Honoring SurvivorsDear Friends and Sponsors

You make such a difference in the lives of those impacted by crime!  Through Crime Victims United (CVU), your contributions have helped victims and their families cope with loss, move their lives forward, as well as ensured that public safety is the number one priority of our legislators and leaders in protecting all Californians. Thank you.  At our 2020 annual event we are changing up our celebration from our traditional dinner to an over the top reception with an intimate VIP Experience.

Save the Date!

We take great pleasure inviting you to the 30th Anniversary of
Crime Victims United:
Stars Honoring Survivors on
April 22, 2020.

The reception and VIP Experience will be held at the fabulous Firehouse Restaurant located in the heart of Old Sacramento Waterfront. CVU is honored to partner with Hollywood and premiere producers, our special guests Ernie and Shavaun Avila (Deadliest Catch). The Avila’s lives were devastated by crime and the injustice of the criminal justice system towards crime victims. They have been instrumental in victim’s rights legislation and have now produced a documentary chronicling the murder of Ernie’s sister Missy Avila, Murder on the First. This is a prime opportunity to get to know Hollywood’s finest, elected state officials, public safety leaders, and victim’s advocates in a friendly setting while enjoying delectable food and drink at the Firehouse. Whether you drop in for the reception and meet the Avilas, or opt to stay through our intimate VIP Experience, this evening will be one to remember.

Over the years, your donations have funded CVU restorative programs, guiding families through the complex criminal justice system, giving legal assistance, providing college scholarships, and public safety advocacy.  It is your charitable giving that has kept CVU vibrant and relevant over the past 40 years.  Attached are sponsor opportunities that support our mission to restore the shattered lives of crime victims and survivors. Join us for this special celebration.  Please give generously.

Murder on the First
The True Story of Missy Avila

Michele Yvette “Missy” Avila was an American teenager who was brutally murdered by her former best friends and rivals, Karen Severson and Laura Doyle, in October 1985. The two women held Avila face down in approximately six inches of water and placed a four-foot, 100-pound log on her body to hold her down in the water.

Immediately after committing the murder, Severson ingratiated herself with the Avila family by stopping over to express sympathy, pretending to help find the “‘true killer’” and visiting on Thanksgiving.  Severson and her 2-year-old daughter even moved in with the Avila family afterward.

Severson got out of prison,  began promoting a memoir about the crime, her prison experience, and made a deal to have a film produced. Avila’s family sued her in 2015, seeking to take the profits of the sales.  The State of California passed Missy’s Law, requiring entities who are helping publish works made by criminals to contact the families of the victims about the said works.

Murder in the First

“Murder in the First” is a documentary by Shavaun and Ernie Avila (The Deadliest Catch) about their sister, Missy Avila.
