Legislative Win: SB 672

Blocked for One Year

We’re proud to report a major advocacy win this month: California Senate Bill 672 has been officially placed on a one-year hold, thanks to strong and united opposition from Crime Victims United, District Attorneys across the state, and the California District Attorney’s Association (CDAA).

SB 672 proposed a dramatic expansion of parole eligibility by allowing inmates—convicted of serious and violent felonies and denied parole—to reapply for another hearing in as little as 3 years. This would have reduced the current wait periods of 7, 10, or even 15 years that are meant to spare victims and families the repeated trauma of frequent parole reviews.

From day one, CVU sounded the alarm. We worked closely with victims, families, District Attorneys, and legal professionals to educate lawmakers about the emotional toll this bill would impose on survivors and the risks it could pose to public safety. Together, with the legal expertise and critical engagement of CDAA, we provided testimony, coordinated outreach, and mobilized a broad coalition of voices to ensure the real impacts of SB 672 were not ignored.

This one-year pause is a direct result of those efforts—and a reminder that when victims and justice advocates stand together, we can protect hard-won rights and safeguard the future.

We’ll continue monitoring SB 672 and remain prepared to act if it returns. For now, we thank all of you—our supporters, partners, and survivors—for making your voices heard.

Savor the Flavor, Support the Mission: Tickets On Sale Now for the 8th Annual Auburn Rib Cookoff

Crime Victims United is excited to welcome the community back to one of Auburn’s most anticipated events of the year—the 8th Annual Auburn Rib Cookoff—taking place Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Auburn Recreation Park.

What began as a small gathering of local BBQ enthusiasts has grown into a regional favorite, drawing thousands for an afternoon of food, music, and meaningful purpose. Now in its eighth year, the cook-off serves as a major fundraiser for Crime Victims United, supporting our statewide advocacy efforts and scholarship programs for victims and survivors.

Eight exceptional cook teams—such as Barnyard BBQue, Red Dog Barbeque, Muskies Meats, and more—will fire up the grills and compete for top honors in both Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice categories. Attendees are invited to sample and vote for their favorite ribs, making every bite part of the competition.

Beyond the barbecue, guests will enjoy live music, dancing, a mechanical bull, a kids’ zone, cold beer, a full-service bar, and an expanded vendor market. The cook-off offers something for everyone, making it the perfect summer outing for families, friends, and food lovers alike.

Why Go VIP?

For those looking to enhance their experience, VIP tickets offer early access to the event at 12:30 p.m.—a full hour before general admission. VIP guests will beat the crowds, enjoy more time to taste ribs without long lines, and have access to premium seating and shaded areas. It’s the best way to make the most of your day at the cook-off while supporting a powerful cause.

Proceeds from the Auburn Rib Cookoff directly fund CVU’s mission to protect and uplift victims of crime through legislative advocacy, education, and support services. Your ticket isn’t just an entry—it’s an investment in justice and healing.

Tickets are on sale now. Be sure to get yours early—this event sells out fast! Don’t forget to like and follow the “Auburn All-America Rib Cookoff” Facebook page for updates and exciting information!
